The doctor and the consult
Published Thursday December 4th, 2008

Over the next few weeks, I'll be doing a series of columns on plastic surgery.
Since my past columns have touched all different bases in regards to enhancing ourselves one way or another, I went a step further and peeked into the world of cosmetic surgery.
I met with Dr. Brent Howley a couple of weeks ago in his office. I had heard that there was a new plastic surgeon in town - in fact he's been here for over two years.
I was told that he was good looking (he is) but that he was also very professional. I was very pleased that he could take time out of his busy schedule to answer questions that would help inform my clients.
Dr. Howley is originally from the Cape Breton, and he attended St. Francis Xavier, Dalhousie University and then off to University of Toronto where he completed a five-year residency program in plastic surgery.
He is registered with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, among other associations. His credentials and clinic can be viewed at www.drhowley.ca.
During the consult, questions are asked so that the doctor can see what is best for you.
Sometimes we're not sure what we should have done and by getting to know you the doctor can usually narrow it down.
Whether it's to enhance your appearance, help self esteem or just feel good about yourself - that's your choice.
Motivation, physical health and other alternatives will also be discussed during the consult.
They talk about downtime, recovery, risks (there are risks in everything) and of course the cost (there are payment plans offered through independent companies).
Write your questions down before you go because sometimes we forget. I was doing the interview and had to check my papers.
Aesthetic surgery alters our appearance to give us what we are really looking for, but we need to be realistic.
Surgery does not perform miracles, but works with what we have. Every person has the right to feel good about themselves, so make sure the decision is all about you.
Not everybody goes for plastic surgery. There are other options, and some are just not that willing or ready.
People would talk if we were to go, but you can bet that 95% of us stand in front of the mirror and pull our facial skin back. There is just a small percent that will take that step to have it done.
Would I have plastic surgery? I really don't know. That is because I have other alternatives. But liposuction - take my saddle bags away!
There are many reputable plastic surgeons in Moncton. I was lucky to meet with Dr. Howley.
Do your homework and find a doctor that is compatible and compassionate to your needs.
Most of the time, surgery cannot be reversed, especially when it comes to cosmetic procedures.
Even though we want what we want, take your time, do your homework and think it through.
Your doctor will answer all your questions and if you have to make a second trip to see him or her, do so.
It's your body and you have to keep it forever.
Next time, I'll discuss the facelift - before and after.
